A Meeting in the Forest Visiting Speaker: Author Jean Hegland with graphic novel artist Lomig

Come immerse yourself in a forest of graphic and literary art! Watch projections of trees growing and characters coming into being beneath the pencil of award-winning French graphic novel artist Lomig as he creates original drawings inspired by his graphic novel adaptation of Jean Hegland's best-selling novel "Into the Forest." Lomig and Jean will begin with a brief discussion of graphic novels and Lomig's creative process as he adapted Jean's story. Then, as Jean reads aloud from her novel, Lomig will illustrate her reading live on-screen, starting with a blank piece of paper and ending with evocative and fully-realized pieces of art. This unusual event will offer audience members an hour of inspiration and meditation, as well as an invitation to consider different kinds of story-telling, and how visual art and literature interact with and enhance each other.

Nerd Novels: Fiction that Explores Ideas, Celebrates Facts, and Tells a Darn Good Story

What do art history, organic geochemistry, literary theory, astronomy, philosophy, and genetics all have in common? One answer is that they are a few of the many scholarly disciplines that have recently appeared in fiction. Presenter Jean Hegland and her colleague Susan M. Gaines have coined the term "Nerd Novel" to describe novels that incorporate a specific field of study or body of knowledge into their plots, conflicts, characters, and themes. Jean will describe this fascinating new trend in fiction and discuss some of the particular pleasures that Nerd Novels can offer to both experts and novices in the fields they explore. Expect to leave with lots of great suggestions for what to read next!

Books on Stage/Telling the Story

Join us for an evening with Sonoma County’s own Jean Hegland. Jean’s most recent novel, Still Time, is about a Shakespeare scholar’s attempts to come to terms with his life and reconcile with his estranged daughter as he struggles with Alzheimer’s disease. Booklist described it as “Heartbreaking in the best possible way.” Her first novel, Into the Forest, has been translated into over a dozen languages, was adapted into a movie that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015, and has recently become a best seller in France. The event will be followed by wine, cheese and conversation in the lobby.
